Recent Amazon EC2 Outages and Issues

  • Apr 242024
Between 9:39 AM and 1:20 PM PDT, we experienced increased API error rates and failures for new instance launches in a single Availability Zone (usgw1-az1) in the US-GOV-WEST-1 Region. During this time, EC2 and services that depend on EC2, such as EKS, ECS and Workspaces, saw elevated error rates for APIs that create, modify or terminate instances in the affected Availability Zone. Running instances in the affected Availability Zone and APIs that targeted the unaffected Availability Zones were not impacted throughout the course of this event. The issue has been resolved and the service is operating normally.
  • Apr 242024
We are seeing broad signs of recovery for the increased API error rates and failures for new instance launches in a single Availability Zone (usgw1-az1) in the US-GOV-WEST-1 Region. Customers may still see some API error rates while our mitigation efforts complete, however, retries would likely succeed. We will provide you with another update by 1:30 PM PDT.
  • Apr 242024
We have a high degree of confidence that our current mitigation efforts will be successful, however it will take a short time to complete. As the mitigation proceeds, we expect to see incremental recovery until we are fully recovered. We will provide you with a further update by 12:45 PM PDT. The issue is also affecting services that depend on EC2 such as EKS, ECS and Workspaces. Instances that are already launched continue to operate normally. EKS Managed Node Group create and update operations are failing intermittently. Customers can create a new Managed Node Group by specifying subnets in the unaffected Availability Zones.
  • Apr 242024
We continue to experience elevated API error rates in a single Availability Zone (usgw1-az1) in the US-GOV-WEST-1 Region. We are working on multiple parallel paths to mitigate the issue. Instances currently running remain unaffected, however, API calls to create, modify or terminate the instances in the affected Availability Zone are not working. APIs calls directed to launch instances targeting the non-impacted Availability Zones are working. While we do not have an estimate for recovery at this time, we are tracking the progress and will provide you with another update by 11:45 AM PDT.
